ALEXIS

Alexis checked her reflection in the bathroom mirror and was relieved to see that she didn’t look nearly as ill as she felt. It was nerves, she decided, as she opened her clutch and removed the lipstick stored there.

Despite working at a rather exclusive nightclub, this was easily the largest collection of wealthy individuals she had ever seen in one location. It was impossible not to feel absurdly out of place. Just that morning, she had been at her apartment, putting nonlethal mousetraps in the floor of the pantry.

With her lipstick reapplied, Alexis studied her reflection again. You wouldn’t know it to look at her that she wasn’t one of those elite. She didn’t want to think about how much the jewelry she was wearing must be worth.

She was playing a role, she reminded herself. She had already spun new lies about a college education. Why stop now?

It occurred to her that, if she did end up dating Bradley after this, her lies were going to be exposed. That was assuming that they dated for some time and there was cause for her to speak with Mr. Hawke again.

One thing at a time, she told herself. Before she could even think of openly dating Bradley, she had a job to finish. Alexis took a deep breath, steeled herself, and walked back into the fray.
